Our homes are our havens – a safe place from the world around us, a place to relax and rejuvenate with friends and family. Are they really as safe as we think they are and as safe as we want them to be?

A Harvard University School of Public Health study of 10,000 homes in the US and Canada indicated that half of the homes tested showed evidence of water damage and mold.

Of those, 50% – 100% of the individuals living in those homes had an increase in respiratory problems.

Black Mold is a very real and serious problem

Read mold FAQ’s

The culprits: Aspergilus, Stachybotrys, and Cladosporium – all forms of toxic black  mold.

Scientists, microbiologists, and mycologists classify mold as a fungi. Mold acts as a scavenger, when a living organism dies mold decomposes the entity and uses it as a food source.

Cellulose is a primary food source for mold. Cellulose is found in wood, cotton, paper, hemp, and various other manufactured products. When these items become moist they become a feeding ground for mold. That feeding ground can be in your house, your house, your car, your place of work.

One square inch of mold infestation can produce over a million spores that are released into the air.

I have known a few people who had mold problems in their homes. One was a neighbor, the house was just covered with mold. I didn’t know back them just how life threatening molds could be. She was always sick with odd sorts of conditions, falling to the floor and not able to breathe was one of her many symptoms. Interesting enough it seemed to happen when she or her two kids opened different boxes of toys, particlarly the box of Lincoln Logs.

Her husband had respiratory problems and odd skin conditions. Their two kids, pre-kindergarten age, were always sick and looked fragile. She was a Registered Nurse, and he was a Radiologist. She embarrassingly showed me her bathroom for a quick second almost 20 years ago. She cleaned it regularly with all kinds of toxic heavy duty products – nothing worked. The walls were black with mold. It was out of control.

She asked me if I knew of anything that would get rid of mold. The only thing I knew back then is that I was using essential oils for all my cleaning and air freshening and never had a trace of mold. I suspected the essential oils were preventing my house from getting mold. So I told her to try thyme essential oil in a spray bottle.

The thyme helped, but it never cleared up the infestation. Had I knewn back then what I know today I would have been able to help her more.

Like for starters, you need therapeutic grade essential oils, specifically the Young Living blend called Thieves, and a nebulizer diffuser. That essential oil has to be literally put into the air for 48 – 72 hours to kill the mold and prevent it from coming back.

They sold the house and moved away. The new owners had a contractor in and he said, “tear it down, it’s beyond repair.” That was 10 – 12 years ago. I watched the guys tear the house down and cart it off in dump truck loads. None of the workers wore protective clothing, no special handling of materials. I know today that is NOT the way to remove a house covered with toxic mold.

What I also know now that I didn’t know them, when they moved – they took all of those mold spores with them! Those spores were on every item in that house. They’ll never get rid of their mold problems and health issues until they kill every speck of that mold they’re carting around with them.

The other couple I knew, they bought their very first home. Within a month of moving in they discovered mold coming out of the woodwork, all over the place. Apparently, the previous owners did some cosmetics so that unweary perspective buyers would not notice there was a mold infestation.

This couple went back to the real estate agent and complained. They wanted the previous owners to pay for the massive remediation. The couple was denied, not even a penny. I personally feel this couple deserved compensation because this is going to affect the lives of them and their two little kids and be a huge financial burden.

I am no lawyer and cannot say for sure if they would be compensated. I do know this couple couldn’t afford a lawyer for guidance, legal advice, or court should it go that far. I do know this, that couple could have afforded a Pre-Paid Legal membership.

I wrote a previous post on mold in vehicles. I wonder how many of those buyers have lost a bundle because they bought cars that have been in floods and have mold issues.

I wish I knew back then what I know today. These two things, Young Living essential oils and legal protection, would have made a significant difference in at least those lives.
