What are Essential Oils Good for – learn a little about many

Here’s a little run-down on some of my favorite essential oils. Of course, I am only referring to therapeutic-grade essential oils, i.e., Young Living. Please, do NOT try to use other brands of essential oils the same way you would use Young Living, they are not the same quality and you could cause harm to yourself or someone else.

BASIL [Ocimum basilicum ]
Benificial for intestinal problems, muscle spasms, poor memory and mental fatigue.

BERGAMOT [Citrus Bergamia]
Psychologically it has a refreshing, mood lifting quality. Citrus, refreshing action can soothe anger and frustration. Caution: Bergamot is very photosensitive do not go into sunlight or ultraviolet light within 48 hours after topical application.

CEDARWOOD [Cedrus atlantica]
Has a warm, balsamic, woody aroma. Relaxing and soothing when used for massage, and can be used for healthy lung function. Historically is recognized for its calming, purifying properties and is used to benefit the skin and tissues near the surface of the skin. It also helps calm nervous tension. Good for oily skin.

CHAMOMILE, ROMAN [Chamaemelum nobile]
Helps calm and relieve restlessness and tension of mind and body. It’s gentleness makes it especially good for restless children. Soothing to all skin types. In massage, for relief of muscle discomfort after exercise. Roman Chamomile was one of the Saxon’s nine sacred herbs.

CINNAMON BARK [Cinnamomum verum]
One of the most antimicrobial essential oils. It has been produced in Sri Lanka for over 2,000 years. Researchers found that viruses could not live in the presence of cinnamon oil. Do not apply directly to skin without diluting with a carrier oil.

CISTUS [Cistus ladanifer]
Known as “rock rose” and has been studied for its effects on the regeneration of cells. Calming to the nerves good for healing wounds.

CLARY SAGE [Salvia sclarea]
Regulates and balances hormones, relieving symptoms of PMS and menstrual stress.

CLOVE [Syzygium aromaticum]
Is one of the most antimicrobial and antiseptic essential oils. Eugenol, its principal constituent, is used synthetically in the dental industry for the numbing of gums. Raises energy levels.

CORIANDER [Coriandrum sativum]
Has been researched for its effects in lowering glucose and insulin levels and supporting pancreatic function. It also has soothing, calming properties. Supporting healthy digestive and circulatory system functions and has been studied for its support of the pancreas.

CYPRESS [Cupressus sempervirens]
Creates a feeling of security when dealing with emotions, gives energy, helps circulatory system with edema, cellulitus, varicose veins and water retention.

DILL [Anethum graveolens]
Has been researched for its effects in glucose and insulin levels and supporting pancreatic function. It is used in European hospitals. Brings mental focus from overwhelm.

ELEMI [Canarium luzonicum]
Has been used in salves for skin and is included in healing ointments, as baume paralytique. Used on the battle wounds of soldiers, Elemi belongs to the same botanical family (Burseraceae) as frankincense and myrrh. Antiseptic and antimicrobial, it is widely regarded today for soothing sore muscles, protecting skin and stimulating nerves.

EUCALYPTUS [Eucalyptus globulus ]
A few drops, as an expectorant, added to a bowl of steaming hot water or diffused, and inhaled to relieve respiratory and sinus problems. Excellent for congestion when combined with the blend R.C. 

FRANKINCENSE [Boswellia carterii]
Used for thousands of years as a holy oil. Stimulates and elevates the mind. Helps in overcoming stress and despair. Said to raise the vibratory quality of the environment and eliminate negative energies from it. Relieves nervous tension, fear and nightmares.

GERANIUM [Pelargonium graveolens]
Enhancement of liver and pancreatic balance, and skin care applications.

GRAPEFRUIT [Citrus paradisi]
Has uplifting energies that vanquish feelings of resentment and envy. Used for weight loss. Do not use citrus oils topically if you plan on being in the sun.

A blend to help bring renewed faith in the future and maintain the emotional fortitude to achieve one’s goals and dreams.

HELICHRYSUM [Helichrysum italicum]
Breaks up crystalizations, regenerates tissue, improves skin conditions, nerves, and circulation. Reduces tissue pain.

LAVENDER [Lavandula angustifolia]
Relaxing and soothing effects, historically used for burns (it is critical that you use “therapeutic-grade” lavender for burns so you do not harm yourself). Both physically and emotionally calming and balancing. Excellent for the home first-aid kit due to its versitility. Useful for sore joints and muscles; putting a few drops on a hanky and breathing in the smell can chase away tension headaches. Steam inhalations using lavender relieves colds, sore throats and bronchitis. Lavender is also useful in relieving stomach aches, colic, toothache and teething pains.

A blend that helps deal with abandonment, rejection, and betrayal, enabling one to rise above negative emotions and magnify our life’s purpose. This blend also helps us overcome self-defeating behaviors, such as procrastination and self-pity.

MARJORAM [Origanum marjorana]
Relieves muscle aches and pains, calms the respiratory system.

LEMON [Citrus limon]
Cleanses the lymphatic system, relieves digestive problems. Do not use citrus oils if you plan on being out in the sun.

ORANGE [Citrus sinensis]
Helps to relieve boredom and encourages a positive outlook. An anti-depressant. Do not use citrus oils if you plan on being out in the sun.

A blend created by Gary Young as a result of an injury in which severely torn ligaments in a leg. A blend which has an active principle similar to cortisone; clove, peppermint, calming for nerves; and helichrysum, soothing to localized joint and muscle discomfort.

PATCHOULI [Pogostemon cablin]
May increase skin resiliency and softness. Helps prevent wrinkles and chapped skin. Releases anxiety related to sex, physical energy and money.

This gentle, fragrant blend is specially designed for diffusing. Helps promotes relaxation and a deep sense of peace, helping to dampen tensions and uplift spirits. When massaged on the bottom of the feet, it can be a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night’s rest. It may be especially calming and comforting to young children during an overactive, stressful day.

PEPPERMINT [Mentha piperita]
Elevates and opens the senses, benificial for the respiratory system, as a preservative and for purification.

This blend has an empowering fragrance, which gives a feeling of being “in the moment.” One can only go forward and progress when in the present time.

A blend to purify indoor air, neutralize mildew, cigarette smoke and other noxious odors. Can be used to cleanse and soothe insect bites, cuts and scrapes.

RAVENSARA [Ravensara aromatica]
Respiratory problems and antiseptic activity.

Diffusing this blend may help relieve allergy symptoms. Helpful in relief of respiratory congestion and sinusitis, and topically or diffused for staph infections. I like applying RC to my chest and upper back, and then applying Cypress on my chest and upper back when I have congestion.

A combination of Ravensara and Eucalyptus radiata, which gives strength in fighting respiratory discomfort.

May stimulate a sense of harmony and balance within the mind and body and help release anger and frustration, bringing about a sense of peace and emotional well-being. Helps with stressed tight muscles too.

This blend has an extraordinary anti-inflammatory action, relieves deep tissue pain.

ROSE [Rosa damascena]
Has the highest frequency of 320 Hertz. Rose oil helps bring balance and harmony to the body. A component for benificial skin care, it is stimulating and elevating to the mind. Helps create a sense of well being.

SANDLEWOOD [Santalum album]
Has a rich sweet, warm, woody aroma that is sensual and aromatic. Used as incense inreligious ceremonies and meditation. Uplifting and relaxing. Valued in skin care for its moisturizing and normalizing properties.

A blend to enhance mental and spiritual awareness. Brings a feeling of sacredness and protection. I love this one for meditation and spiritual events.

When inhaled may enable one to relax into a mental state whereby one may be able to release the memory trauma of sexual and/or ritual abuse.

Is extremely uplifting, refreshing and arousing. Sensation is also very beneficial for skin problems of any kind.

Spruce [Picea mariana]
Aids respiratory, glandular and nervous systems. Helps achy muscles. Helps ground and balance the emotions when applied to the solar plexus.

This blend is formulated for dominant personalities who at times become overbearing, unfocused and self-defeating. It also may help recover equilibrium and calm inner strength.

TEA-TREE OIL[Melaleuca alternifolia]
Has strong antiseptic, antifungal and sedative properties, helpful in healing wounds, skin irritations, fungus infections like ringworm and athlete’s foot. Aids in relieving discomfort of cystitis and yeast infections. May relieve aching joints and muscles, pain and itching of cold sores and herpes blisters.

This blend enhances the immune system, kills germs, warms, aids circulation and strengthens gums, kills oral bacteria making it a perfect choice  for oral hygiene.

A blend formulated to open the subconscious mind through pineal stimulation to release deep-seated trauma encoded in the DNA of the cells. Bringing a sense of grounding and uplifting through emotional releasing and elevated spiritual consciousness.

Blended for the actor Steven Seagal for the work he does in hospital trauma centers. It may help release buried emotional trauma as well as upsets from ongoing life , such as accidents, the death of a loved one, assault, abuse, etc. This blend of calming, grounding essential oils can help purge stress and uproot traumas that cause fatigue, anger, restlessness and a weakened immune response.

VALERIAN [Valeriana officinalis]
Has been used for more than a thousand years for its profoundly calming, relaxing, grounding and balancing influences. It has been clinically investigated for its tranquilizing properties.

This blend overcomes fear, gives courage, confidence and power. Aligns the 2 hemispheres of the brain. “Chiropractor” in a bottle.

One of my favorite blends, brings a delicate sense of strength and protection. Creates a powerful awareness on one’s potential. Protects against negative energy.

YLANG YLANG [Cananga odorata]
Calms and creates a sense of relaxation, influncing sexual energy and enhancing relationships. When combined with Lavendar it is excellent for the skin.
