Whites absorb more nonstick and stain- and water-resistant products contaminates…

A suspected carcinogen used to make nonstick and stain- and water-resistant products contaminates white Americans at three times the rate of Mexican Americans and nearly twice that of blacks, according to new data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.Men in all three groups are slightly higher than women, according to the research, slated for publication in the April 1 edition of Environmental Science and Technology.

CDC researchers cannot explain the differences, though genetic and lifestyle factors are primary culprits.

“It is difficult to know,” said Antonia Calafat, senior research chemist at the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health and the paper’s lead author. “Everything would be a speculation.”

The contaminants, known as perfluorochemicals or PFCs, are widely found in low levels in people and wildlife across the globe. In higher doses, they are suspected of causing cancer and other health problems in laboratory animals. Last month, a U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency panel advised regulators to classify one of them, perfluorooctanoic, or PFOA, as a likely human carcinogen. Continue reading

The law requires warning labels on products known to

contain carcinogens or reproductive toxins?

Nonstick pans, wind-proof coats, even that 40-pound sack of dog food hauled home from Costco the other day all need a state Proposition 65 warning because they conceal a potential human carcinogen, a coalition of labor and environmental groups says. The culprit is PFOA, a long-living chemical necessary for modern wonders such as Gore-Tex and Teflon but suspected of contaminating the blood of everyone on the planet. Earlier this month, a federal scientific advisory panel concluded that PFOA, or perfluorooctanoic acid, likely causes cancer….

The law requires warning labels on products known to contain carcinogens or reproductive toxins. Most manufacturers faced with a Proposition 65 requirement retool their products to remove the problematic chemical.

“When you think of PFOA, you should think of it as one of the nastiest, most toxic, environmentally unfriendly chemicals,” said Richard Wiles, senior vice president of Environmental Working Group. “Citizens should have the right to shop their way around this chemical and make decisions to reduce their exposure.” Continue reading...

Curious what your Body Burden score is?

Click here to take the Body Burden quiz – while it is not a complete assessment it does offer some clues.

What you can do…

You can get products from Young Living Essential Oils that can help to lower your body burden score, learn more about switching over.

I scored “low” on the quiz, I don’t do and use many of the common things the average American consumes. Other than using Young Living’s essential oils and products, I don’t drink tap water or water from plastic bottles (it’s either clean from a well or from a spring – I recycle my empty glass NingXia Red bottles when gathering water), I also do not eat meat or poultry that is not grass-fed and organic (this is where I get my animal products), I also avoid buying any foods that come in plastic packaging.

“If you came into my home right now, you would not be able to find a single medicine, air freshener or household cleaner. Instead of numerous chemical products I have a bag of essential oils and a bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner – that’s all you really need to have a good clean and chemical household. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to have dozens of chemical products when essential oils can take care of so many needs…. seriously, check out the switch list and hat’s only a sampling! People have no idea what they’re missing. Another benefit I’ve discovered, after switching over, I save so much money every month. Yes, it seemed expensive at first but after the initial switch was made – this is a LOT cheaper. I think because you use so little of the essential oils and products.” ~ Evelyn
