Allergies, degenerative and infectious diseases are related in their causes, a supressed immune system. In Nancy Appleton’s work she discovered that such immune system suppressions can occur with many of the foods that are ubiquitous in our modern diet, of which the chief culprit is sugar. She also found out that stress allowed to fester into distress has similar effects on our health.

For many eating any foods that are normally good for you with an abusive food like sugar may eventually cause you to be allergic to that food. The doctor tells a story of her unhealthy youth where she would pop into a hamburger stand and get onion rings with a chocolate shake. Until Nancy Appleton started applying the principles of homeostasis and mineral balance to her own life, she couldn’t have told you why even raw onions made her nose run, her joints ache and parts of her body swelled up. The sugar in the chocolate shake and the fried fat of the onion rings were such an assault on her immune system that her body classified onions as a foreign invader thus creating a food allergy. Usually, the allergies you get are precursors and warnings for more serious conditions that you get later in life. Eating foods from the list of commonly abused foods makes your gastro-intestinal tract permeable (leaky) so that not all of the food digests and these particles enter the bloodstream. Most people are allergic to: sugar and most other sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, dairy, chocolate, corn and anything that you eat with a lot of sugar or that you overcook. A person can be allergic to anything if they abuse it by eating it with sugar.
The immune system reacts and and sends out white blood cells and antibodies to deal with the threat, because food particles are not supposed to be in the bloodstream. Disease follows allergy because one immune weakness creates more. The allergan acts like sugar, stress or anything else to which you react. An allergy to milk may mean lots of undigested calcium that may show up as dental plaque, hardened arteries, or the lactose may spike your insulin response as if you had eaten regular sugar. Have you seen the commercial on TV stating, “what’s bad about high fructose corn syrup, it’s fine in moderation…” – yeah right, and I’m the Easter Bunny. Remind me of that the next time my boyfriend consumers a beverage or food that contains high fructose corn syrup!

For many years, Dr. Meira Fields and her coworkers at the US Department of Agriculture investigated the harmful effects of dietary sugar on rats. They discovered that when male rats are fed a diet deficient in copper, with sucrose as the carbohydrate, they develop severe pathologies of vital organs. Liver, heart and testes exhibit extreme swelling, while the pancreas atrophies, invariably leading to death of the rats before maturity.
Sucrose is a disaccharide composed of 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose. Dr. Fields repeated her experiments to determine whether it was the glucose or fructose moiety that caused the harmful effects. Starch breaks down into glucose when digested. On a copper-deficient diet, the male rats showed some signs of copper deficiency, but not the gross abnormalities of vital organs that occur in rats on the sucrose diet. When the rats were fed fructose, the fatal organ abnormalities occured.
Lysl oxidase is a copper-dependent enzyme that participates in the formation of collagen and elastin. Fructose seems to interfere with copper metabolism to such an extent that collagen and elastin cannot form in growing animals–hence the hypertrophy of the heart and liver in young males. The females did not develop these abnormalities, but they resorbed their litters.
These experiements should give us pause when we consider the great increase in the use of high fructose corn syrup during the past 30 years, particularly in soft drinks, fruit juices and other beverages aimed at growing children, children increasingly likely to be copper deficient as modern parents no longer serve liver to their families. (Liver is by far the best source of copper in human diets.)
“The bodies of the children I see today are mush,” observed a concerned chiropractor recently. The culprit is the modern diet, high in fructose and low in copper-containing foods, resulting in inadequate formation of elastin and collagen–the sinews that hold the body together.
Nancy Appleton, PhD, clinical nutritionist, has compiled a list of the harmful effects of fructose in her books Lick the Sugar Habit, Healthy Bones, Heal Yourself With Natural Foods, The Curse Of Louis Pasteur and Lick the Sugar Habit Sugar Counter. She points out that consumption of fructose causes a significant increase in the concentration of uric acid; after ingestion of glucose, no significant change occurs. An increase in uric acid can be an indicator of heart disease. Furthermore, fructose ingestion in humans results in increases in blood lactic acid, especially in patients with preexisting acidotic conditions such as diabetes, postoperative stress or uremia. Years ago I just stopped buying many foods and beverages because I had just about had enjoy with the low quality ingredients (complete junk and/or poisons) that made me feel generally crappy. Today, if I even take a taste of many popular types of food and beverages (processed of course) – geez, they make me gag! Ha, and I thought they tasted nasty 20 years ago!
I’m all for people making products and a living… I just think that at some point we need to say, “hey, wait a minute… do you think I’m so stupid that I’m going to let you convince me that it’s ok to consume total garbage!?” [I'm more of a purest, than a health freak] I just think what we use and consume should be more in alignment how Mother Nature intended it to be… I want my milk, cheese, yogurt, butter to come from raw milk and have 100% of the fat in it – the fat and beneficial enzymes (which are completely removed today) are in those foods for a reason… they facilitate proper digestion of nutrients. Don’t even think of getting me going on Excitotoxins and Monsanto!
