According to mythology, when Pluto professed his love for Mentha, Pluto’s jealous wife crushed Mentha into the ground. Unable to restore her, Pluto transformed her into a peppermint plant that would give beautiful fragrance whenever stepped upon again.

For centuries, therapeutic-grade peppermint has been used to soothe digestive difficulties, freshen breath, and to help with headaches. Recent research has also indicated that peppermint oil may be useful in combating the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)[1], and may help protect the body from oxidative damage caused by exposure to radiation[2].

Peppermint’s minty fragrance is said to be purifying and stimulating to the mind.

And… it can be used to repel squirrels and rodents, read an interesting story here.

Fragrant Influence

Purifying and stimulating to the conscious mind. Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati found that inhaling peppermint oil increased mental accuracy by 28%.

Testimonial

“I like to use my Young Living peppermint when I’m taking long intensive classes or for long drives to stay alert. I put 1 drop in an 8oz. glass of water and sip – very refreshing and perks me right up instantly!” ~ Evelyn Vincent

Alan Hirsch, MD researched peppermint’s stimulation of the brain’s satiety center (ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus) to curb appetite.

When peppermint is inhaled it has been shown to restore and improve sense of taste by stimulating the trigeminal nerve.

University of Kiel researchers found that peppermint blocked headache pain in a double-blind placebo controlled cross-over study.

Testimonial

“I have been using therapeutic-grade peppermint for over 20 years to reduce and eliminate discomfort from headache pain. I put ONLY one drop on my index finger, rub my two index fingers together and then carefully rub my index fingers on my temples and the base of my skull and neck. During which time my eyes are closed and I breathe deeply and relax. Within a couple of minutes my headache is gone. Since I get such fantastic results using peppermint I’ve replaced all other headache tablets with a single bottle of peppermint in my medicine cabinet and First Aid kit. I’ve found the results of peppermint to be much more dramatic, pleasant and faster. ~ Evelyn Vincent

Tip: keep peppermint away from eyes and do not rub your eyes with peppermint fingers.

Using Peppermint Essential Oil Safely

• Essential oils rich in menthol (such as peppermint) should not be used on the throat or neck area of children under 18 months of age.

• Peppermint should not be used on open wounds.

Layering

This technique consists of applying multiple oils one at a time (a couple of drops of each). For example, place marjoram over a sore muscle, massage gently until the area is dry, and then apply a second oil, such as peppermint, until the oil is absorbed and the skin is dry. Then layer on the third oil, such as basil, and continue massaging.

Cooking with food grade / therapeutic-grade Peppermint

Many food grade essential oils make excellent food flavorings. But keep in mind that they are so concentrated that only 1 – 2 drops of an essential oil is equivalent to a full bottle (1 – 2 oz. size) of dried herbs.

As a general rule, spice oils impart a far stronger flavor than citrus oils do. For strong spice oils (such as oregano, nutmeg, cinnamon, marjoram, tarragon, wintergreen, thyme, or basil), you can dip a toothpick into the bottle of essential oil and stir into the food (after cooking) with the toothpick.

The ‘toothpick’ method controls the amount of essential oil that is put into the food or beverage.

Some food grade essential oils that can be used as spices are: basil, cinnamon, clove, fennel, ginger, lemon, marjoram, nutmeg, oregano, peppermint, rosemary CT cineol, sage, spearmint, tarragon, coriander, grapefruit, mandarin, orange, wintergreen, black pepper, and thyme.

For recipes that serve 6 – 10 people, add 1 – 2 drops of an oil and stir in after cooking and just before serving, so the oil does not evaporate. Read More Tips for Cooking with Essential Oils.

General Food Grade Essential Oil Cooking Tips

• Ginger, cinnamon, clove or nutmeg can be added to spice up gingersnap cookies. Be sure to use the toothpick method described above!

• Lemon, orange or tangerine can be added to a plain sponge or bundt cake recipe. Be sure to use the toothpick method described above!

• Peppermint or spearmint can be added to chocolate cake, brownies, or frostings. Be sure to use the toothpick method described above!

• Nutmeg, cinnamon, clove or ginger can be used in pumpkin pie or spice cake recipes. Be sure to use the toothpick method described above!

• Oregano, marjoram, thyme or basil can be used in tomato sauces for spaghetti, pizza, and lasagna recipes. Be sure to use the toothpick method described above!

• Lemon, clove, orange, tangerine or peppermint can be added to enhance the flavor of puddings and fruit pies, Add 1-2 drops for 4-8 servings.

• Lavender can be added to a sugar cookie recipe or softened vanilla ice cream. Be sure to use the toothpick method described above!

• Lemon, orange, tangerine or peppermint can be added to water for a cool refreshing drink. Mix 7-10 drops of essential oil (4-8 drops if using peppermint) to 1 teaspoon of Blue Agave Nectar and add to a pitcher of col water, stir.

• Lavender, roman chamomile, orange, tangerine, lemon, peppermint or melissa can be used to make herbal teas. Mix 1 drop essential oil with 1 teaspoon of Blue Agave nectar or Honey, and stir into a cup of cooling hot water.

The recent peanut butter and cookie dough contaminations are the latest evidence showing how broken our food system is. Under enormous pressure to do something about it, Congress has introduced several food safety bills that could start cleaning up the mess-or put sustainable farmers out of business. Clearly, it’s a hot topic, but the hope is that the [food safety] standards will apply only to those it fits-the big industrialized agribusiness companies that put processed foods on our grocery shelves.

A partial list of Health and Human Service’s recalled foods so far this summer include:

Lewis Laboratories’ chocolate flavor nutrition drink

C.F. Sauer gravies and sauce mixes

Publix brand chocolate and vanilla whey protein

Malt-o-Meal Maple & Brown sugar flavored cereal

Three types of seasonings from Kroger

You can try to ignore outbreaks of E.coli in our cookie dough, and masses of kids and grown ups who are overweight or obese and extremely unhealthy, but the fact is, this whole scenario is connected.

Perhaps the massive profit driven food companies are partially or wholly responsible for this diet and health disaster-in-the-making by using tricks of the trade to enhance color, texture and taste of the carb and starch laden foods. Read the rest of this entry »

Since the age of 4 years I have enjoyed what most people consider weeds. I loved going into the fields and woods near our home and foraging for wild edibles. At 15 I began using herbs for flavoring food and for healing. But it wasn’t until my early 20s that I serious began learning more about native and wild edible species for food, healing, and as medicine. I came across this article through a friend, Richard Cleveland at LoveTheEarth.com which shows how one mans weed can be another man’s medicine. With the economy the way it is these days and with big pharma conditioning us to take their chemical drugs I believe it’s more important than ever to make time to learn the plants that surround us, using them in a sustainable and ethical manner,  for health – remembering that from our humble beginning, our bodies and the wild plants ‘evolved’ together… our bodies recognize them.

“Below is a touching and powerful story about a friend of mine who contracted Cancer several years ago. Because of fate or divine intervention… it really doesn’t matter, he is now Cancer free. This is actually three articles, but well worth the read”….  ~ Richard

Dandelion Magic

Hi, my name is Carl and I have been a musician and friend of Victor Wooten for many years.

Six years ago, I was diagnosed with advanced type-3 throat cancer. Even though it has a lower success rate, I decided to undergo radiation treatment rather than disfiguring surgery or debilitating chemotherapy. One of my neighbors told me about a 85-year-old farmer named George who cured his prostrate cancer with dandelion root powder.

Weed or Medicine?

Dandelion. Weed or Medicine?

George was told by doctors he had maybe six months to live. I met with George and he told me that God inspired him to use the dandelion root powder. In thanks to God for saving his life he makes dandelion root powder to give away for free to all who need help. He helps hundreds of people some who were told they had no chance & were going to die within months, most of them are alive and well today .George is now 90 and its been 11 years since his diagnosis.

He gave me some and I started to take it along with my radiation treatments. The next 12 weeks were the hardest in my life, I lost over 60 lbs; it was very painful to swallow but I continued taking the dandelion root powder.

Now I am cancer free and feeling stronger than I ever have. I continue to take the dandelion root powder and I have told 2 friends about it that had cancer. They are both healthy now. I grow dandelions in my garden without any chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides added. In the fall I dig them up trying to get as deep as possible to obtain the whole root. I brush off some of the dirt but I do not wash them, George stressed this when he told me how to do prepare the dandelions. I dry them at 95 degrees in a food dehydrator for about 5 days until they are brittle. Then I break them up and put them in a blender to grind to a fine powder and take 1/2 of a teaspoon daily. The powder can be kept for years if stored in an airtight container. I am living proof that nature can help heal cancer. If you have any questions or need more information feel free to contact me.

Note: The dandelion root powder you can buy at a Health Food Store is not made the same way. It is not known to help cancer.

HOW THE LORD TOLD ME TO CURE CANCER:

By George Cairns

(Please save this page, as it won’t be printed again by me. It may save your life or the life of a loved one or a friend. Anyone may reprint this if they print it word for word.) G.C.

Every week around 10,000 people die of cancer. Government figures show the death rate for cancer deaths has not changed in the last 10 years. Chemo and radiation only save around 10% of the people treated. So this shows our doctors don’t have much to work with.

As this article goes on, I will explain how God told me how to cure my cancer of prostate and colon cancer. Also, I will explain how to prepare this plant and how much to take. There is nothing to buy. For some reason, the Lord has picked me to carry these words to our. I am only the delivery boy, and none of this is my idea. I do believe every work I writ here and I’m living proof it works. The cost of printing is my thanks to God for giving me back my life and health. Read the rest of this entry »

It was only a couple days after moving in to our new apartment when at sunset I heard a lot of noise coming from the kitchen. I got onto my crutches to go see what was going on and by the time I got there the noise had stopped. Each evening, at about the same time I heard the same type of noises and each time I hobbled out to the kitchen the noise stopped. I began thinking it was noise from the neighbors yet wondered why it sounded like it was in my kitchen.

Finally I happened to be in the kitchen when the ruckus began. Ahhhh, it’s squirrels in the crawl space over the kitchen sink, sigh… maybe they’ll leave on their own – delusional wishing.

Cute, but I don't want them in the house!

Cute, but I don't want them in the house!

Each evening after that it seemed like the squirrels were inviting friends over. More and more of them each night running around and the sounds were getting louder. Great, that’s all I need, is for one of them to chew on the electrical wiring up there and instant blackout! Not to mention the smell that would no doubt follow as the furry body decomposed.

That’s happened twice to me many years ago and just thinking of having to leave the windows open 24 hours a day for the next two weeks in attempt to rid my home of rotting flesh. And having to deal with an electrician coming in to replace the chewed up wiring.

Low and behold, two nights later during one of their more active eposodes one of them must have found a small hole or space between the studs and ended up between the kichen and living room walls. I heard him fall down in between the kitchen and living room wall… great!

Bandit our dog was very quick to run to the kitchen and sniff at the baseboard where he heard the little critter moving around and trying to climb back up the inside of the wall. I stood and watched as Bandit sniffed and snorted, and touched the wall with his paw and let out one of his loud woofs. I smiled and said, “squirrel.” Since he knows the word squirrel he jumped up into the air wagged his tail and proceeded his sniffing, snorting and pawing… I could see his doggie brain thinking, “oh boy, was this great fun, a squirrel right here in the house, COOL!”

Bandit

Bandit

Then, the little squirrel began squeaking. Of course Bandit was right there to hear the series of three squeaks (they always came in threes). This continued for over three hours. After 45 minutes Bandit  became concerned and kept coming over to me as if to say, “something is wrong here, do something about it!” He knows the word “help” and he also knows when ‘help’ is being applied. So now I felt bad for both the trapped squirrel and for Bandit who couldn’t understand ‘why’ I wasn’t something about this. Don’t you just feel awful when your dog ‘knows’ that ‘you’ should be responding and you’re not, the puzzled expression they get and they keep trying to communicate to you to do something… sigh.

I went to my computer and emailed our new landlord and told him what had happened. He said he’d be over around lunchtime the next day to bust a hole in the wall if the squirrel was still trapped. It indeed was still trapped, we heard him off and on all night and through the morning.

Our landlord arrived with a live trap and tools and began pulling the wall apart and sawing. He and Curt worked at trying to get that squirrel to come out of the wall and into the trap… hahahahaha, we all must have been delusional thinking that would happen!

After an hour the squirrel hadn’t budged. Curt and the landlord devised many ingenious tools in attempt to pry this critter out of the corner (the corner of the furthest away stud). No matter what they did this little guy was NOT going to budge – it was as if his feet were cemented in place. He’d squeak, hiss and growl as these two men tried to gently coax him into entering an alein world.

After they duck taped my large soup ladle to a 3 foot long 1×1 and still couldn’t get this critter to budge, they starting discussing how they could wrap up their hand and arm and reach in and pull him out. I was wondering which one of them was going to get bit first.

I chimed in thinking out loud, “what can we do to make that corner he is set on glueing himself to less safe and appealing???” I suddenly blurted out… “ack, my Young Living peppermint oil! That’s suppose to repell rodents!” They were eager to give my suggestion a try. Since I’m a Young Living distributor you can get the oils at my website, TheVeryEssence.com

So we took the old fishing rod (because it was thin and flexible) and fashioned a cotton ball on the tip of it (scotch taped the cotton ball on the tip) – I put about 20 drops of peppermint oil on the cotton ball.

Curt guided the tip of the fishing rod back into the corner without bumping the squirrel with the peppermint drenched cotton ball and there we waited. The three of us spoke softly wondering if it would work and if so how long would it take.

With our flash light shining into the corner we could clearly see that the little guy didn’t care for the peppermint at all. The corner was no longer a safe-haven. He slowly came to the opening in the wall and stuck his head into the live trap to examine if it was safer than being in what was now an inhospitable corner.

We watched as he thought about making a move into the trap. Then, he jumped in the trap!

Darn, the door didn’t trip and he quick as a shot went back into the wall when we manually tried to spring it. Drats! Let’s do it again…

We could clearly see he was NOT going to stay in the wall for long with that peppermint. He made his way back into the trap, this time the door sprang shut. Finally!

From the time Curt put the peppermint fishing rod into the corner it took about 5-10 minutes for the squirrel to leave. And because the trap didn’t spring shut properly the first time it added about another 5 minutes before this little squirrel was actually caught. Compared to the other methods tried which well exceeded an hour, I’d say the peppermint worked like a charm.

They say ‘one drop’ of Young Living peppermint oil equals about 28 cups of peppermint tea, so with my putting about 20 drops on this cotton ball, holey smokes was it ever strong smelling! Good smelling but strong. We left the peppermint soaked cotton ball in the wall thinking that it would prevent any other squirrels from getting in there.

I’m posting some video’s in this article that I’ve found on vaccine’s and the health risks associated with them. I believe that there are probably a dozen vaccines that are useful, the rest… well, let’s just say that I don’t think they should even be allowed to be manufactured. You just don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the health of our kids has declined dramatically  and there is a definite link to that and vaccines.

Diabete’s, autism, asthma, learning disabilities, SID’s, ADHD, and ADD are just a few of the long-term side effects. Did you know that autism was never seen in humans before the 1930s, which is when the first vaccines came out – and they were loaded with mercury. Today, vaccines still contain mercury and we see 1 in 160 children come down with autism. As compared to a study done with Amish children (who shun vaccine’s) in the Amish, only 4 children out of 22,000 have autism – and 3 of those 4 children did vaccinate. No rocket science here!

And many say vaccines have never even been proven to prevent any type of flu virus.

What do I do to prevent flu viruses?

I use my high quality Young Living Essential Oils regularly. Therapeutic essential oils are known for their anti-viral properties. And it was essential oils that prevented the 4 thieves from contracting the Black Plague in the 1400s while they robbed the homes of the dead and dying plague victims.

I have a nice little stash of Young Living Thieves essential oil and Thieves products (learn more here), so named for the blend the thieves rubbed on their bodies before robbing the homes and bodies of the dead and dying plague victims. Snake Oils these are NOT.

When I see someone poo-pooing the benefits of therapeutic-grade essential oils (which isn’t too often), I shrug my shoulders and think to myself… “that’s their loss, not mine. Knowing what I know about plants and essential oils, there is no way that I wouldn’t turn to them as my first and only line of defense.” And, you can bet the farm on it that I’m not waiting until I catch something, it’s far cheaper and easier to ‘prevent.’ Plus, I know that my Young Living oils are NOT going to cause any type of disease, nor are there any side effects.

Question:

Great post, thanks! I have a couple questions that I’m hoping you may have an answer to: I bought some Essential Oils a couple weeks ago from the store. Since I already had the same oils already open, I figured I’d put these oils in the refrigerator to hopefully preserve them, since I won’t be using them for awhile. After reading more about EO’s, it seems extreme temperatures, whether it be hot or cold, can destroy some of the EO’s chemicals. Do you think that these essential oils I’ve refrigerated have now gone bad from being in the cold?

Question 2: I was at a pretty “high quality” health food store which carried a large variety of different kinds and brands of Essential Oils. They had a brand which sold there oils at really high prices. This brand was ‘XYZ”. Before I think about buying these, I was wondering if you have ever heard of this brand, and if they were a reputable company or not. I would just hate to spend that much money on low quality oils. Thanks for your help in advance!

Answer:

Thanks! And thanks for asking your question, it sounds like you’re someone who wants to learn a lot more so you can make the best choices on buying the best essential oils. Read the rest of this entry »

All the talk of the last decade has been about avoiding the sun and avoiding skin cancer. We slather ourselves with sunscreen full of chemicals and think we are doing the right and prudent thing. After all, who wants prematurely aging skin and melanomas?

Now many health advocates are questioning the safety of total sun avoidance, and study after study now point to the importance of sun exposure and vitamin D. A lack of sunlight can put you at risk for a vitamin D deficiency, and increase your susceptibility to a number of diseases-many of them life-threatening.

Enjoy summer sun safely.

Enjoy summer sun safely.

So the dangers of skin cancer and sunscreen versus the benefits of the sun and vitamin D, leave the average American confused about the contradictory messages. Avoiding the sun altogether will protect the skin from aging and some skin cancers, but lead to deficits in vitamin D, which leads to other serious health issues including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and depression, to name just a few. My 2003 Prius is due for new tires which made me recall an ABC News video on car tires, you better believe I am going to heed their warning, those old tires are hazardous. The video will show you how to read the (encrypted) date when the tire was manufactured so you’re NOT buying a car tire (that has never been used) that could be up to 12 years old!

You might think a 12 year old tire isn’t a problem, or maybe that a new tire that’s only 6 years old isn’t a problem either. But you know how our highways are practically littered with complete treads of tires that have fallen off of cars and how they appear to be brand new as you speed by… well those are in fact very old tires, sold as new. Just because you bought them recently and they have perfect tread doesn’t mean that they are new (fresh) tires, tires very much do have a shelf life. You could be an unsuspecting consumer and could be buying quite old tires – and it doesn’t take much driving on them before they fall apart and cause an accident. Learn how to read the encrypted code on them so when you’re in the market for new tires, like I am, you get what you’re paying for, rather than something that could kill you and your kids.

Consider this…

A huge percentage of the approximate 4,000 chemicals approved by the FDA to "fragrance" products are known carcinogens and many may be labeled an "essential oil."
