Note: Depending on the layout of your home and other factors, you may need to make adjustments to your order.

For instance, you may want to include a bottle of Lemongrass essential oil to kill one specific kind of toxic mold that the Thieves oil won’t kill. The size and shape of your home may also mean that you need to order more than one bottle of Thieves essential oil.

Q: If I want to have samples taken where should I begin to look for a professional?

A: One option is to contact the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) and search for a referral in your area using their  searchable listing of members. Or, try  looking in the yellow pages under environmental, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene, and mold sampling.

Q: How will I know if I have found a good professional to do the testing?

A: According to the Indoor Air Quality Association, they say that an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Professional should be able to supply you with:

  • Company qualifications, including certifications
  • Start and completion dates for the project
  • Certificate of insurance and applicable licenses
  • References
  • What type of samples will be taken
  • Provide you with a report
The largest organization of trades and professionals dealing with IAQ issues is the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA). Many IAQA course alumni with sufficient experience and knowledge have also become certified by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC), a prestigious, independent certification body for the industry. These trained and certified professionals are available to resolve your IAQ issues.

Q: Will the professional I hire know about Thieves essential oil and how it has performed for others?

A: It’s not likely that they will know about Thieves or how it is used. They have been trained to use conventional treatments. To date, there is no treatment for mold that is safer than using the Thieves essential oil.

Q: I’ve heard recommendations to use bleach for mold problems, is this a good choice?

A: No, bleach is highly toxic to humans, pets and the environment. Even the EPA now says that using bleach is not only ineffective but that it is extremely bad for your health. Bleach will kill mold, however, the mold will begin to grow back in 24 hours.

Q: How long is the diffusing process?

A: That depends on your situation. It could be 24, 48, or 72 hours. The length of time depends on how bad the mold infestation is, which types of mold you have, and how elevated the toxic mold spore counts are. You must at least diffuse for a minimum of 24 hours for the diffusing treatment to be effective. Another factor is, how cluttered your home is; if it is very cluttered it may be impossible for the micro-fine mist of essential oil emitted from the diffuser to come into contact with the mold spores. Many take this as a sign and an opportunity to rid their homes of clutter.

Q: What if I have damp, moldy items in my home, what can be done about them?

A: To be on the safe side, it is best to get rid of them if they cannot be thoroughly cleaned and kept from becoming damp and moldy again in the future.

Q: Does Thieves essential oil also kill Aspergillus penicillium?

A: No. This is why it is recommended to order a the Lemongrass essential oil (item #3591) and use it as part of your 24, 48, or 72 hour diffusing treatment. Lemongrass is inexpensive and it makes sense to order a bottle to be on the safe side.

Q: How do I combine the Lemongrass with the Thieves oil?

A: Since the performance and efficacy of the diffuser relies on the bottle being fairly full you can check back in and momentarily stop your diffuser and add the Lemongrass oil to the bottle to top it off. You will need to do this every 10 hours.

Q: Can I be in my home during the diffusing?

A: No. It is recommended that you leave and take your pets with you (fish, birds, reptiles, cats and dogs). Even though the essential oils are non-toxic the Thieves oil contains spicy oils (clove, cinnamon and rosemary) that can irritate the mucus membranes. It is ok to go into the home during treatment briefly to make sure all is going well and to top-off your bottle every 10 hours. You will probably want to wear a face mask when going into your home to be on the safe side.

Q: Can I section off rooms in my home and perform the 24 hour (or longer) treatment?

A: Yes. You will want to close the door to the room(s) being treated and maybe even hang a sheet of plastic over the door too.

Q: Does one treatment for 24 hours have to be done again? Or, is that it forever?

A: You will want to perform weekly maintenance by diffusing Thieves oil for a total of 8 hours a week. This can be done by running your diffuser 15 minutes at a time a few times a day, or 8 hours in one day. You will also want to use the Thieves Household Cleaner for your normal weekly household cleaning (yes, you can add Lemongrass oil to your dilution of Thieves Household Cleaner). Dilution ratio’s for the Thieves Cleaner concentrate are on the label.

Q: My mold situation doesn’t appear to be too bad, do I still need to diffuse for a minimum of 24 hours?

A: Yes.

Q: How will I know if diffusing for 24 hours was long enough?

A: You won’t know unless you have your mold professional come in again to do a follow-up sampling. If you suspect 24 hours wasn’t enough or won’t be enough, increase the time to 48 hours.

Q: My house has mold and I don’t have enough money to hire professionals, is there anything I can do?

A: Yes. You can properly repair the source(s) of moisture entering your home and get rid of all items that are moldy and damp. Then, just assume that your house does have toxic mold and carry on with the recommended steps.

Q: I’m moving to a new home, how will I know if it has toxic mold?

A: You have no way of knowing unless you have testing done. What I do before moving into a new home is diffuse for 48 hours while the place is empty. Because mold is in 50 percent of all homes tested in the United States and Canada I just assume that all houses have a mold issue. It is far less expensive to assume a place has mold and treat it, than it is to discover a problem later on.

Q: I’m not sick from my house and I don’t see any mold, should I be doing anything?

A: Yes, you can do what I do and assume that mold could become a problem and follow the recommendations for preventing mold. I have found this to be highly effective and recommend that everyone perform weekly maintenance.

  1. My friend has toxic mold and is not recieving help from the landlord. They have moved out but wonder if they will have to get rid of all of their belongings. Will Thieves get rid of dead spores and mycotoxins or should they get rid of everything they own and start over?

    Thank you,
    Melody

  2. Hi Melody,

Generally speaking, it would probably be a good idea to get rid of the belonging’s when the toxic mold count is high. Though the diffused Thieves essential oil will kill black mold, it must come into contact with the spores in order to kill them.

When there’s a household that’s filled with belonging’s it’s probably unlikely that the diffused Thieves essential oil would come into contact with all the spores in the nooks and crannies.

Also, for those of you with black mold, make sure to diffuse your car too! Everyday when you hop in the car you’re bringing those spores with you. Here’s an article I wrote on diffusing your car that should produce quite favorable results, How to Get Mold Out of your Car.

For those who don’t have mold yet, you can ‘prevent’ it from happening by diffusing Thieves essential oil in a ‘cold-air nebulizer diffuser’ on a maintenance basis. Being proactive in regards to toxic black mold is your best defense. I cannot tell you how many horrible stories I hear from people whose health has been ruined from black mold in their homes – YES these molds can grow in the human body too! Believe me, you do NOT want that to happen to your and your family.
