Mold FAQ’s

What to order for a black mold problemTheraPro Diffuser, Thieves essential oil, Thieves Household Cleaner

  • 1 – 15ml bottle Thieves Oil Blend (#3423)
  • 1 Thieves Household Cleaner (#3743)
  • 1 TheraPro Premium Diffuser (#4495)

This will cover 1,000 sq.ft.

Add one additional bottle of Thieves essential oil for each additional 1,000 sq.ft. of space.

Add 1-2 more bottles of Thieves essential oil for weekly maintenance to keep mold away.

Add a bottle of Lemongrass essential oil to kill all the mold species (there is a  species of toxic mold Thieves will not kill).

How to Facts

Does your house have toxic mold? Where to contact a professional

An environmental professional, an engineer, an industrial hygienist, or an indoor air quality specialist with proper credentials, the right equipment, and experience can perform testing for you to find out which species of mold you do have and in what quantities. The tests sold in stores are not good enough and you would be better off putting your money into another aspect of getting control of the mold problem.

A Pro-active Approach

Ideally, you would have a professional come in to do mold testing. Unfortunately, some cannot afford to hire a professional, in which case you might consider doing what I do if your mold problem is not horrible and if you are not terribly sick from living with the mold.

Of course, the first thing I do is make certain that I have repaired all moisture issues and leaks. And, I never let a small leaking problem turn into a large expensive problem. Again, being pro-active saves money, time and lives.

I just assume that I do have every type of toxic mold growing in my living and work spaces. When I move, I make time to diffuse the new place before moving in just to be on the safe side.

I make sure I have plenty of Thieves or Purification essential oil blend(s) on hand, a proper diffuser such as the TheraPro Premium Diffuser, and a bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner.

I personally like to add to my Thieves or Purification essential oils either Lemongrass or Thyme essential oils. I do this because there is a species of toxic mold that Thieves oil doesn’t eliminate. I like to err on the side of caution and make sure that I am prepared for all of the toxic mold species. Besides, Thyme and Lemongrass essential oil are very inexpensive!

My order might look like: 2 – 15ml bottles of Thieves essential oil, one 15ml bottle of either Thyme or Lemongrass essential oil, and a full bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner.

I already have two diffusers, so I have everything I need and I’m set to go now.

Getting Everything Ready for Diffusing

The next step is to diffuse the essential oils continuously (non-stop) for a minimum of 24 hours in the home, or office. But before doing that I need to make sure everything in my space is in order…

You cannot live in the space being diffused while it’s being diffused during the 24 or more hours of non-stop diffusing. Even though the essential oils are not toxic the fact is that there is cinnamon and clove oils in the Thieves blend and those are spices and will irritate the mucous membranes.

I make plans to either not be living in the area that I’m diffusing -or- I make plans to stay some place else for 24 hours. I also make sure to not leave my pets in the space either, the oils are way to potent for them to be inhaling, so I pack them up too! Yes, this also applies to fish, birds, reptiles, cats, dogs, all pets. I like to stay not too far away because I like to come back and make sure the diffusing is going a-OK, I return home every 4-6 hours or so to take a very quick peek.

I open all interior doors, cabinet doors, and dresser drawers. If I have drawers or closets that are a bit too full, I simply pull some of the stuff out. The object here is to imagine how the air is going to flow through the space, will it flow freely or will it be up against roadblocks?

In order for the essential oils to be effective and dissolve (kill) the mold spore cells, the micro-fine mist of the diffused essential oil MUST come into contact with the mold spores.

I place my diffuser fairly high, the height of a fireplace mantle is good. and I try to locate it centrally so I don’t have to move the diffuser room-to-room. Many houses these days have an open floor plan, this is good. But for homes that are kind of chopped up and if you know the diffused mist is not likely to go around a bend and down the hall and into a bedroom let’s say, then you may have to move the diffuser a time or two.

Do keep in mind that the TheraPro Diffuser and one 15ml bottle of Thieves oil will only cover 1,000 sq.ft. This would mean that if your home is 1,800 sq.ft. and has a basement, you will have to break the house up into ‘3’ sections and diffuse each section for 24 hours; that can take some time to do, be patient and do it properly so you will be certain to tackle any mold issues.

Getting the Diffuser Set Up and Running

I attach my bottle of essential oil to the diffuser (watch the video to see how easily this is done). I turn on the diffuser to the highest setting and have it on continuous, I do NOT want it to shut-off (make sure your diffuser is not on the timed setting!)

Once I turn the diffuser on, I’m ready to walk out the door.

Note: Testing shows that as the Thieves essential oil is used up during the diffusing process as the bottle becomes low the output is not as great as it should be – to counteract this, return every 10 hours and add more essential oil to the partly emptied bottle. This would be a good time to add more Thieves oil and your Lemongrass essential oil to top-off the bottle.

Check Back Occasionally

I like to check back in a bout one hour, just to make sure I set everything up properly and make sure everything is going the way it’s supposed to. I’ll check back in 4-6 hours later, and that again. Note that the output of the diffuser is best when the bottle does not become too low, top-off the bottle with more Thieves oil or Lemongrass for best results. Sometimes my 15ml bottle of essential oil is empty in under 24 hours, not to worry that’s a good thing. The goal is to get one 15ml bottle of essential oil into the air within 24 hours, this is a shock treatment to the mold spores.

During one of my check-in’s I’ll add some Lemongrass or Thyme to my partially emptied bottle of Thieves oil to top it off and set the diffuser back on again – I do come back one hour later to double-check that I have set everything up properly, making any adjustments if necessary.

Diffusing is Completed, What’s Next?

I usually return hours after the diffusing is expected to be done. If the mist is still lingering in the air when I go back I might decide to go out again for a few hours to allow the oils to continue to do their thing.

Next, clean everything with the Thieves Household Cleaner, surfaces, countertops, furniture. I think of this cleaning as a deep Spring cleaning and do a thorough job.

However, if I know the house had a serious mold issue I would gear-up and wear a hazmat suit and mask so as to not inhale any of the mold spore pieces. This is a safety precaution and excellent practice. Even dead mold spores can cause allergic reactions, so protective gear is highly recommended.

Sometimes, in homes where there is a bad mold problem you might see or feel the dead mold on surfaces likes table and counters. You will want to use the Thieves Cleaner undiluted unless the surface is of some delicate nature and dilution would be necessary.

I wash my curtains and maybe even all or most of my clothing too, to do this I add one capful of the Thieves Household Cleaner to the detergent dispenser in place of all other laundry products. By the way, this is how we have washed all of our laundry for the past 10 years or so, we really like using the Thieves cleaner instead of detergents – try-it, you may discover you like it better too!

Do Your Maintenance!

Don’t let your time and money be wasted! Using the light or medium dilution ratio on the Thieves Cleaner label use that to clean your house from now on. Clean everything with it, it’s all-purpose. The Thieves Cleaner can be used (and replace an entire cabinet full of other cleaning products, freeing up space in otherwise over-crowded cabinets).

Use Thieves Cleaner for: laundry, floors, windows, counters, sinks, kitchen, bathroom, tubs/showers, in place of carpet shampoo chemicals, everything… we even use it to wash our car and clean the upholstery!

Diffusing Weekly Maintenance

You will want to run your diffuser for 30 minutes a day, or any time combination totaling about 8 hours a week.

This serves many functions: it keeps the mold from coming back, makes the house smell great, and helps prevent colds and flu.

If you’re diffusing for 30 minutes a day as your maintenance program you can use the timer on the TheraPro Diffuser and simply set it before you go to work or when you run out to do some errands. Most people are not sensitive to being in a home during a 30 minute diffusing, but each body type is different – use your better judgement and common sense.

I personally enjoy being home during a 30 minute diffusing period. I like breathing a bit of my essential oils because they help keep me well. There was one period in my life when I didn’t so much as catch a sniffle in 13 years! That’s because of the power of the essential oils.

Mold on the Home Exterior

If there’s mold on the exterior of the home use a 1:1 ratio, i.e. 1 part Thieves Cleaner to 1 part water. If you live in an area where there is low humidity, you may dilute the Thieves Household Cleaner 1:4, 1 part Cleaner to 4 parts water.

  1. Thieves, eh? Pretty appropriate seeing as bleach works equally as well on mold.

David – today, the EPA does not recommend using bleach because it is so toxic. Also, while bleach does kill mold… the mold DOES start to grow back after 24 hours. Therefore bleach is considered hazardous and ineffective by the EPA and others. So, yes… Thieves – it works, it keeps working, and it’s not going to poison you or the environment. ~ Evelyn Vincent Moderator/Admin

  2. Evelyn, I am pregnant with our fourth child and a test on our well water found mold. We have high humidity year round in this farm house and have been fighting growing black mold on all our windowsills and in our closets since we moved in 9 years ago. I happened to notice while starting a seed flat a few years back that the soil was growing a fuzzy mold. I accidentally poured mint oil on it and it disappeared. I tried it on the black mold and nothing happened.

Over the last 5 years I have suffered with seizures of unexplainable source, skin rashes, hair loss and digestive problems. I changed my diet drastically, no wheat, dairy, soy, and added anti fungals, like ACV, garlic (10 cloves a day), oregano oil, and olive leaf extract. I’ve been without the seizures (and for the most part the other symptoms) for a year, but I’ve stopped the anti-fungal treatment because of a recent miscarriage.

My number one question is: Is this safe for pregnant women to inhale? and #2 Do you have any reference books to recommend?

Thanks for putting this information out there!

PS – David, bleach does not work on our windowsill mold, in fact it makes it worse since the window sill wood is now “wet” with it.
